Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 3 Released
July 23, 2009
Ubuntu Karmic alpha 3 is here. Some of the new features
1. New development version of the GNOME desktop environment, 2.27.4
2. Linux kernel 2.6.31
3. Sad news for me
Pidgin is replaceed with the Empathy instant messenger client.
4. Ubuntu One is now part of the Ubuntu operating system!
5. The already popular Notify-OSD notification system introduced in Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) has been revamped. It is now a little longer, narrower and has smaller fonts… which makes it slicker than before!
6. The biggest change for me. The Intel video driver has switched from the “EXA” acceleration method to the new “UXA”. This solves major performance problems of Ubuntu 9.04, but could use further testing to flag any regressions it may bring.
7. ext4 by default
8. Grub 2 by default

Thanks for the post. By biggest complain with pidgin is it notifies me when contact comes online or goes offline – and I can’t turn it off … atleast didn’t find option.
Just installed empathy on Jaunty (9.04) and it seems simple clean (just enough stuff on listing window). You seem to like pidgin better. any reason?

Well Emapthy is really good, mainly because it has voice and video capabilities but I’ve been using Pidgin for the longest time so I am probably biased when I say that I still prefer Pidgin.
Between about disabling the user notification is little hard to find.
